Image #1 Snow's Paws
The first image in my portfolio is one of my cat, Snow. This was taken in my bedroom with my point and shoot camera. I chose this image because of it is one of my favorite subjects, my cats. I also chose it for its strong composition, technical aspects, and artistic qualities. For composition there is interesting point of view. The image was taken from the cat's level but a bit raised. This was done to capture the texture of the cat's fur and paws. The technical aspect of the piece is the lighting. It was a natural light from my room. The lighting seems yellow and warm, almost welcoming. The artistic qualities of this piece is the unexpected composition. Cats are usually captured from straight on, and showing their face. I chose to only capture his body, I achieved this by having a different camera angle.
Image #2 Clay Parts
The second image is one that that I captured during a trip around the school to collect photos. This was taken in the art department in the ceramic area of some clay tools. Elements of composition like line and shape as well as positive and negative space is shown in this piece. Those elements are created by the tools and the way they are placed. The technical aspects of this piece is the focus of the piece. The tools are sharp and in focus when the background is blurry and out of focus. This makes the tools stand out even more. The artistic qualities of the piece is how a simple object can be made beautiful by the camera.
Image #3 Corner of the School
The third image was also taken on the classes adventure around the school. This image is one of a wall corner in the art gallery area. Elements of composition such as leading lines are apparent in this piece. The lines of the bricks draws the eye down through the image. The technical aspects of the piece is the focus, or the shallow depth of field. The foreground is in focus but as the image goes on into middleground, and background it gets an increase in blur. The artistic qualities that make this image different and special is the unexpected composition or point of view. This angle of the wall would never be seen, but by creating this angle it is now a part of the world.
Image #4 Toys and Jars
The third image is of some toys and jars, taken in class. Foreground, middleground, and background are the elements of composition that stand out in this image. The seal and the first jar being the foreground, the bunny in the jar being the middleground, and the biggest jar being the background. The technical aspect of the piece is its shallow depth of field. I created this by using a smaller aperture, F4. I also used manual focus tool to make the foreground in focus and the background blurry. The humor in this piece makes it enjoyable to look at. The humor of the piece stems from the subject matter of the funny toys in unexpected places.
Image #5 Blue Water
The fifth image was taken in class with a fast shutter speed to capture the blue drop in the water. The compositional elements of this piece are the negative and positive space created by the blue dye and the water. The technical aspects of the image is the focus. The water in the jar and the drop on the jar are in focus while the other parts of the piece is out of focus. The feel of this piece is a relaxed feel created by the natural flow of the water.
Image #6 Garden Hose
The sixth and final image is a closeup of a garden hose at my house. Repetition, line, shape, and texture are all compositional elements created by the hose itself. The technical aspect of the piece is that the hose is in sharp focus which makes it really stand out. The artistic qualities that make it successful is the unexpected composition. The extreme closeup of the hose creates shapes and lines that would otherwise not been seen in plane sight.
