Richard Avedon
I recreated a fashion photo by Richard Avedon. Avedon was born in New York City, May 15th, 1923. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City. After High School Avendon enrolled at Columbia University to study philosophy and poetry. He attended Columbia for one year then dropped out to serve in the United States Merchant Marine during World War 11. He worked as a Photographer's Mate Second Class, were he main duty was taking identification portraits of sailors. After two years of service, Avedon attended the New School for Social Research in NYC to study photography under Alexey Brodovitch, art director of Harper's Bazaar. He worked as a fashion photographer, shooting for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. I first heard of Avedon when I saw one of his exhibits in an art museum a few years ago. I love the rawness of his portraits and the elegance of his fashion photos. I chose this specific photo because of the dramatic lighting and the elegance of the model. The photo has a softness created by the focus and warm lighting. The photo was taken from straight one. The model is the clear focus of the photo, as well as her dress. My emulation creates more of a similar feel rather than an exact copy of the photo. My photo has a similar plain background with soft lighting. Each photo creates a sense of movement with the fabric of the dress and the pose of the model. There are also similar negative space created by the model. The lighting is also similar, were the light source came from the right side.
